Italian astronomer and physicist, who invented the optical telescope around 1600 with which he discovered the mountains on the Moon, the four brightest satellites of Jupiter as well as the phases of Venus and the rings of Saturn. Four of the moons of Jupiter, namely Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are referred to as Galilean moons.
